What an extended car warranty covers
Every component group a plan can cover, the level that usually includes it, and where the exclusions are.
- EngineThe engine block, cylinder heads and the internally lubricated parts inside them: pistons, crankshaft, camshafts, timing chain, oil pump and valve train.
- TransmissionThe transmission case and internal parts, the torque converter, valve body and, on most plans, the transmission control module. Automatic, manual, CVT and dual-clutch units are all eligible.
- Drive axle and differentialFront and rear differentials, axle shafts, constant-velocity joints, the driveshaft and universal joints.
- Transfer case and 4WDThe transfer case and its internal parts, the center coupling on all-wheel-drive vehicles, locking hubs and the 4WD actuator.
- Turbocharger and superchargerThe turbocharger or supercharger housing and internal parts, the wastegate actuator and, on higher tiers, the intercooler.
- Air conditioningThe compressor, clutch, condenser, evaporator, receiver-drier and expansion valve.
- Electrical systemThe alternator, starter, voltage regulator, wiper motors, power-window motors and regulators, and power-lock actuators.
- Cooling systemThe water pump, radiator, thermostat, cooling-fan motor and fan clutch.
- SteeringThe steering rack or gear box, the power-steering pump or electric assist motor, and the steering column shaft.
- SuspensionControl arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, and on higher tiers struts, air springs, the air compressor and ride-height sensors.
- Brake systemThe master cylinder, brake booster, calipers, wheel cylinders, hydraulic lines and the ABS pump and control module.
- Fuel systemThe fuel pump, fuel injectors, fuel-pressure regulator and, on direct-injection engines, the high-pressure pump.
- Infotainment and electronicsThe touchscreen and head unit, navigation, the instrument cluster, backup camera, parking sensors, and driver-assist radar and cameras.
- Hybrid and EV componentsThe inverter, electric drive motor, onboard charger, DC-DC converter and battery cooling pump.
Coverage by level
The parts that make the car move, and the most expensive to replace.
Powertrain plus the major named systems.
Exclusionary coverage: everything except a short list of exclusions.
