Summer Car Care Checklist

Heat is tough on cars. Use this summer car care checklist to check your AC, cooling system, battery, tires, and more before road trip season.

Summer driving means road trips, heavy traffic, and high temperatures, and all three put extra stress on your car. Heat can drain batteries, break down fluids, and push cooling and air conditioning systems to their limits. A little attention before the hottest weeks can help you avoid a breakdown on the side of a hot highway.

Air conditioning

A working AC is more than a comfort feature in extreme heat. Signs your system needs attention:

  • Air that is cool but not cold
  • Weak airflow from the vents
  • Unusual noises when the AC is on
  • A musty smell from the vents
  • Water dripping inside the cabin instead of under the car

Replace the cabin air filter if airflow is weak. If the air is not cold, have a shop check for leaks and diagnose the system. Simply adding refrigerant without finding the leak usually only delays the problem. Learn more about air conditioning coverage for cars.

Cooling system

Your engine's cooling system works hardest in summer, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

  1. Check coolant level when the engine is cold. Never open a hot radiator cap.
  2. Inspect hoses for cracks, bulges, or soft spots.
  3. Look for leaks under the car or around the radiator and water pump.
  4. Watch the temperature gauge. If it climbs above normal, pull over safely.
  5. Follow the coolant replacement schedule in your owner's manual.

Overheating can cause serious engine damage, so do not keep driving if the gauge reaches the warning zone. Our cooling system coverage page explains how service contracts handle these parts.

Battery

Many people think batteries only fail in winter, but heat is hard on them too. High temperatures speed up the chemical wear inside a battery.

  • Have the battery tested, especially if it is several years old
  • Clean any corrosion on the terminals
  • Make sure the battery is secured and cables are tight

If your car cranks slowly, the headlights dim at idle, or a battery warning light appears, get the charging system checked before a long drive. A failing alternator can look like a weak battery.

Tires

Hot pavement and heavy loads raise the risk of tire problems.

  • Check pressure regularly when tires are cold, using the number on the driver's door jamb
  • Inspect tread depth and look for uneven wear
  • Look for bulges, cracks, or cuts in the sidewalls
  • Do not forget the spare if your car has one

Underinflated tires flex more and build up heat, which can lead to failure. If you are loading the car with luggage, bikes, or a trailer, check your owner's manual for any recommended pressure changes for heavy loads.

Fluids, filters, wipers, and lights

  • Engine oil. Stay on schedule, especially if you tow or drive in heavy traffic.
  • Transmission fluid. Check level and condition if your vehicle allows it.
  • Brake fluid. Have it inspected.
  • Washer fluid. Bugs and dust make it more useful than you might expect.
  • Engine air filter. Dusty summer roads can clog it faster.

Summer storms can come on fast. Replace streaky or cracked wiper blades, and check that all lights work.

Inside the car

  • Use a windshield sunshade to reduce cabin heat and protect the dashboard
  • Do not leave children, pets, or heat-sensitive items like medications and electronics in a parked car
  • Keep water in the car for long drives

Road trip prep

Long highway miles in the heat are when small problems tend to show up. Before a long trip:

  1. Get any due maintenance done a week or two ahead
  2. Check your roadside assistance details if you have them
  3. Pack an emergency kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, first aid supplies, water, and a phone charger
  4. Plan rest stops in very hot weather to give yourself and the car a break
