Mazda builds cars and SUVs that many drivers keep for years. Knowing how the factory warranty works helps you understand what's covered now and plan for repairs later. Here's a straightforward look at Mazda's coverage.
Mazda's basic warranty
Mazda's new vehicle limited warranty, often called bumper-to-bumper coverage, generally lasts 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Terms can vary by model year, so check the warranty booklet for your vehicle.
Basic coverage applies to most factory-installed parts that fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship. That usually includes:
- Electrical components and power accessories
- Air conditioning and heating systems
- Infotainment and audio hardware
- Steering and suspension parts
- Sensors and electronic control modules
Mazda's powertrain warranty
Mazda's powertrain limited warranty generally lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Terms can vary by model year.
Powertrain coverage typically includes:
- Engine. Internal parts, cylinder block and heads, and certain related components.
- Transmission. Automatic or manual transmission internals and case.
- Drive system. Axles, differentials, and all-wheel-drive components on models that have them.
Some Mazda engines use turbocharging. If your model has a turbo, check whether it's listed under powertrain coverage in your booklet. Our turbocharger coverage page explains how service contracts often handle turbos.
What's not covered
Mazda's factory warranty, like others, excludes certain items. Common exclusions include:
- Wear items such as brake pads, rotors, clutch linings, wiper blades and bulbs
- Routine maintenance like oil changes, filters and fluid services
- Tires, which are typically covered by the tire manufacturer
- Damage from accidents, environmental causes or misuse
- Damage from lack of maintenance or from aftermarket parts
Maintenance and your warranty
To keep warranty coverage in good standing, follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Many Mazda vehicles have a maintenance monitor that reminds you when service is due.
Tips:
- Keep receipts showing the date, mileage and services performed
- Use the oil type and other fluids specified in your manual
- You can have maintenance done at an independent shop, but keep thorough records
- Follow the severe service schedule if you drive in harsh conditions, such as frequent short trips, dusty roads or towing
Buying a used Mazda
Mazda's basic and powertrain warranties are not limited to the original owner, so any remaining factory coverage generally stays with the vehicle. To see what's left, check the original in-service date and current mileage. A Mazda dealer can confirm coverage with the VIN.
Also check for open recalls by entering the VIN on NHTSA's website. Recall repairs are free regardless of warranty status.
When factory coverage runs out
After 3 years or 36,000 miles, basic coverage ends. That means repairs to electronics, air conditioning, infotainment and many other systems become your responsibility. After 5 years or 60,000 miles, powertrain coverage ends too.
Mazda owners who plan to keep their cars well beyond those points sometimes consider a vehicle service contract. Common reasons include:
- Protection for the engine and transmission on a higher-mileage car
- Coverage for electrical and air conditioning repairs
- Help budgeting for unexpected repairs
- Added benefits on many plans, like roadside assistance or rental car reimbursement

Questions to ask before buying extended coverage
- Does the plan cover the specific parts most likely to fail on my model?
- Is it exclusionary or a named-component plan?
- What is the deductible, and is it per visit or per repair?
- Can I use any licensed repair shop, including a Mazda dealer?
- Is the contract transferable if I sell the car?
