An ice maker is one of those conveniences you do not think about until it stops working. Ice maker problems are among the most common refrigerator complaints, and many have simple causes. Here is how to troubleshoot, when to call for help, and what to know about warranty coverage.

How a refrigerator ice maker works

Most built-in ice makers follow the same basic cycle:

  1. A water inlet valve opens and fills the ice mold with water.
  2. The freezer freezes the water.
  3. A thermostat or sensor signals that the cubes are frozen.
  4. A heater loosens the cubes and a motor ejects them into the bin.
  5. A shutoff arm or sensor stops production when the bin is full.

A problem anywhere in that chain can stop ice production.

Quick checks you can do yourself

Before calling a technician, try these:

  • Check the on/off switch or shutoff arm. It may have been bumped into the off position or held up by ice in the bin.
  • Check the freezer temperature. Most ice makers need the freezer cold enough to freeze water quickly. Check your manual for the recommended setting.
  • Look for a clump in the bin. Ice that melts and refreezes can jam the auger or the ejector.
  • Replace the water filter. A clogged filter reduces water flow, leading to small, hollow or no cubes.
  • Check the water supply. Make sure the shutoff valve behind the fridge is fully open and the supply line is not kinked.
  • Look for a frozen fill tube. Ice can block the small tube that feeds water to the mold.

Unplug the refrigerator before reaching into the ice maker mechanism.

Common part failures

If the simple checks do not help, a part may have failed. Common culprits include:

  • Water inlet valve: Can fail electrically or clog with sediment. Low household water pressure can also affect it.
  • Ice maker module or assembly: The motor, heater or control can fail. Many manufacturers sell the ice maker as a single replaceable assembly.
  • Auger motor: Turns the auger that moves ice to the dispenser.
  • Dispenser parts: Door flaps, switches and actuators can wear out.
  • Control board: On many modern refrigerators, a main board controls the ice maker and dispenser.

Signs that point to bigger problems

Some symptoms suggest a problem beyond the ice maker:

  1. The freezer is not cold enough overall
  2. Frost buildup in the freezer compartment
  3. Water leaking onto the floor or pooling under the bin
  4. Ice tastes or smells bad even with a new filter

A cooling problem may involve the sealed system, defrost system or fans, which are separate repairs. Leaks should be addressed quickly to avoid floor and cabinet damage.

Repair or live without it?

Some homeowners decide to switch off a failed ice maker and use trays, especially on an older refrigerator. Others replace the ice maker assembly, which is often one of the simpler refrigerator repairs. If the fridge is old and has other problems, it may be time to compare repair costs to replacement.

Prevent future failures

  • Replace the water filter on the schedule in your manual.
  • Empty and clean the ice bin occasionally to prevent clumps.
  • Keep the freezer at the recommended temperature.
  • Check the supply line for kinks after moving the fridge.

Do home warranties cover ice makers?

This is where many homeowners get surprised. Some home warranty plans cover the refrigerator but exclude the built-in ice maker, ice dispenser and water dispenser unless you buy an upgrade or a higher-tier plan. Others include them in standard coverage with certain parts excluded. Filters, shelves and bins are usually not covered.

Check the refrigerator coverage section of any plan you consider. If you have an extra fridge in a garage or basement, look at second refrigerator coverage too, since it is often a separate add-on.
