Bought a car warranty or home warranty and having second thoughts? Many service contracts include a "free-look period," a short window after purchase when you can cancel and get your money back. Knowing how it works lets you read the contract carefully without feeling rushed.

What a free-look period is

A free-look period is a set number of days after you buy a contract when you can cancel for a full refund, as long as you have not filed a claim. It gives you time to read the full contract, compare it with what you were told, and change your mind.

Many contracts set this window at around 30 days, and some allow 60 days. Some states set minimum requirements, and the specific terms depend on the contract and where you live. Check your contract for the exact length.

Free-look vs. regular cancellation

After the free-look period ends, you can usually still cancel, but the refund works differently:

  • During the free-look period: often a full refund of what you paid, with no cancellation fee, provided no claims have been paid.
  • After the free-look period: usually a prorated refund based on time or mileage used, whichever is greater on some contracts, minus any claims paid and a cancellation fee.

If you financed the contract or rolled it into a car loan, the refund may go to the lender rather than to you directly.

Use the time well

Treat the free-look period as your review window. During it:

  1. Read the full contract, not just the summary page.
  2. Confirm the parties. Make sure you know who the obligor and administrator are.
  3. Check the coverage list against what the salesperson described. Look at what is covered on the plan you bought.
  4. Review exclusions, especially pre-existing conditions, maintenance requirements and modifications.
  5. Look at the deductible and whether it applies per visit or per repair.
  6. Check the waiting period before coverage starts.
  7. Compare the price with other quotes for similar coverage.

If anything does not match what you were promised, you still have time to cancel.

How to cancel during the free-look period

The contract will describe the cancellation process. Common steps include:

  • Send a written cancellation request to the address or email listed in the contract.
  • Include your name, contract number, vehicle VIN or property address, and the date.
  • Some contracts require an odometer reading for vehicle plans.
  • If the plan was financed, include the lender's information.
  • Keep a copy of your request and proof of when you sent it, such as a tracking number or email receipt.

Ask the company to confirm the cancellation in writing and to tell you when to expect the refund.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Missing the deadline. Count days from the date in the contract, not from when you received paperwork in the mail.
  • Canceling by phone only. A written request creates a record.
  • Assuming automatic payments stop. Confirm that monthly payments are canceled, and watch your next statement.
  • Filing a claim first. A paid claim typically ends your right to a full free-look refund.

Home warranties have them too

Many home warranty contracts also include a cancellation window, though terms vary by company and state. Read the cancellation section of your home warranty contract, including any fees and how refunds are calculated after the first month.

If you have trouble getting a refund

If the company does not respond or will not process a refund you are owed, contact your state's insurance department or attorney general's office, since many states regulate service contracts. If you paid by card, your card issuer may also be able to help. Our FAQ covers other common questions.
