Questions to Ask About Claims Before You Buy

How a warranty handles claims matters as much as what it covers. Ask these questions about repairs, payment, and denials before you sign.

Most people shop for a car or home warranty by comparing coverage lists and prices. Fewer ask how claims actually work, until something breaks. By then, the terms are set. Asking the right questions before you buy can save you frustration and money later.

Starting a claim and choosing a shop

Start with the basics:

  • How do I start a claim: by phone, online, or both?
  • What hours is the claims line available?
  • Does the repair shop contact you, or do I?
  • What information will I need, such as a contract number, mileage, or model and serial numbers?

A simple, clear process is a good sign. Write down the answers so you have them when you need them, and save the claims phone number in your contacts.

For auto service contracts:

  • Can I use any licensed repair facility, including dealerships and independent shops?
  • What happens if I break down far from home?
  • Does the shop need to be approved before work starts?

For home warranties:

  • Do you assign a contractor from your network, or can I choose my own?
  • What happens if no network contractor is available in my area?
  • How long does it usually take to schedule a visit?

How is a claim approved?

Understanding authorization helps you avoid unpaid bills.

  1. Does the shop need approval before starting repairs?
  2. Who pays for diagnosis or teardown to find the problem?
  3. Is diagnostic time covered if the repair is approved?
  4. Will an inspector be sent before approval on large repairs?
  5. How long does approval typically take?

If a shop starts work before authorization, you may end up paying for it. Ask about this up front.

How is the repair paid?

Payment details make a big difference:

  • Do you pay the shop or contractor directly?
  • If I pay first, how do I get reimbursed and how long does it take?
  • What is the deductible or service fee, and is it per visit or per repair?
  • Are there limits on labor rates or parts pricing?
  • Will you pay for new, used, or remanufactured parts?

What can cause a claim to be denied?

Every contract has conditions. Ask directly:

  • How do you define a pre-existing condition?
  • What maintenance records will I need to show?
  • Is wear and tear covered, or only sudden breakdowns?
  • Are code upgrades, permits, or removal fees covered on home repairs?
  • Are there per-item or annual coverage caps?

These answers tell you a lot about how a plan works when you need it. Our article on what home warranties commonly cover and our auto coverage overview can help you compare.

What if I disagree with a decision?

Even good providers sometimes deny claims. Find out:

  • Will I receive the reason for a denial in writing?
  • Is there an appeal or review process?
  • Who can I contact to escalate?
  • Does the contract include an arbitration clause or other dispute terms?

If you still have a dispute, your state's insurance department or consumer protection office may be able to help, depending on how your state regulates these contracts.

Extras that affect the claim experience

Some plans include benefits that help when something breaks. Ask whether the plan includes:

  • Rental car or transportation reimbursement during covered repairs
  • Towing or roadside assistance
  • Trip interruption coverage for breakdowns away from home
  • Food spoilage coverage when a covered refrigerator fails

These vary by plan, so confirm what applies and any limits. Ask how to use each benefit, too. Some require you to call before arranging a tow or rental, and some reimburse only with receipts.

Get it in writing

Answers given on the phone are helpful, but the contract is what counts. Before you sign, compare what you were told with what the contract says. Our claims page explains how the process generally works.
